Equilibrium Spline Interface ( ESI) for magnetic confinement codes
نویسندگان
چکیده
A compact and comprehensive interface, called ESI, between magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium codes and gyro-kinetic, particle orbit, MHD stability, and transport codes is presented. Its irreducible set of equilibrium data consists of four 2or 3-D functions of coordinates and four 1-D radial profiles together with their first derivatives. The C reconstruction routines (accessible also from Fortran), which are a part of the interface, allow the calculation of basis functions and their first derivatives at any position inside the plasma. After this all vector fields and geometric coefficients required for the above mentioned types of codes can be calculated using only algebraic operations with no further interpolation or differentiation. The interface is designed for 1. simple nested two and three dimensional configurations (a) with scalar pressure, (b) arbitrary pressure balance (within confinement limits); 2. magnetic configurations with magnetic perturbations (a) with scalar pressure, (b) arbitrary pressure balance (within confinement limits); Considering the simplest case of simple nested surfaces with scalar pressure as a default case, the interface specifies the the data structure, which should be generated for its input by equilibrium codes. In particular, ESI specifies what data should be provided in the ASCII (human readable form) and what is permitted to be binary. Leonid E. Magnetic geometry and the confinement of electrically conducting plasmas
We develop an effective field theory approach to inspect the electromagnetic interactions in an electrically neutral plasma, with an equal number of negative and positive charge carriers. We argue that the static equilibrium configurations within the plasma are topologically stable solitons that describe knotted and linked flux tubes of helical magnetic fields.
متن کاملSADDLE POINT VARIATIONAL METHOD FOR DIRAC CONFINEMENT
A saddle point variational (SPV ) method was applied to the Dirac equation as an example of a fully relativistic equation with both negative and positive energy solutions. The effect of the negative energy states was mitigated by maximizing the energy with respect to a relevant parameter while at the same time minimizing it with respect to another parameter in the wave function. The Cornell pot...
متن کاملShape optimization for a sharp interface model of distortion compensation
A mechanical equilibrium problem for a material consisting of two components with different densities is considered. Due to the heterogeneous material densities, the outer shape of the underlying workpiece can be changed by shifting the interface between the subdomains. In this paper, the problem is modeled as a shape design problem for optimally compensating unwanted workpiece changes. The ass...
متن کاملThermal equilibrium of pure electron plasmas across a central region of magnetic surfaces
Measurements of the equilibria of plasmas created by emission from a biased filament located off the magnetic axis in the Columbia Non-neutral Torus CNT T. S. Pedersen, J. P. Kremer, R. G. Lefrancois et al., Fusion Sci. Technol. 50, 372 2006 show that such plasmas have equilibrium properties consistent with the inner surfaces being in a state of cross-surface thermal equilibrium. Numerical solu...
متن کاملConfinement of nonneutral plasmas on magnetic surfaces.
The confinement of a nonneutral plasma in a magnetic-surface, or stellarator, configuration is explored. The fluid equilibrium equations are derived and are found to be fundamentally different from previous results. Diocotron modes are predicted to be stable. The collisional confinement time can be very long. Possible applications include positron trapping and confinement of positron-electron p...
